In accordance with Bijié Wǎng, Cuba's Bitcoin community has developed a censorship-resistant financial system using Cashu and Lightning Network to facilitate offline transactions amid economic instability and frequent power outages. The community, established in 2022, created a 'sovereign bank' called 'Community Cashu' to enable peer-to-peer transactions without third-party interference. The system includes a Lightning Network node optimized for mobile use and a Cashu 'mint' protocol that allows offline, privacy-preserving transactions through blind signing. The initiative also features user-friendly tools like 'La Chispa' to simplify payments. The model is now being considered for expansion to other regions in Latin America and Africa. The Latin American Bitcoin Federation has recognized the project, with Cuba Bitcoin joining as one of 39 communities in 2024.
