Citing Bijié Wǎng, a new preprint study titled 'Swarm Oracle: Trustless Blockchain Protocols via Robotic Swarms' introduces a decentralized system where autonomous robots collect and verify real-world data for blockchain smart contracts. The system uses low-cost mobile robots equipped with sensors and communication hardware to reach consensus via a Byzantine fault-tolerant protocol, enabling data to be published on-chain without centralized intermediaries. The research builds on earlier work showing that robot swarms can maintain consensus accuracy even when up to a third are compromised. The system includes a local permissioned blockchain for data storage and a reputation mechanism to exclude malicious or faulty robots. The team tested the protocol in simulations and with physical Pi-Puck robots. Potential applications include disaster insurance claims, environmental monitoring, and decentralized infrastructure networks. Challenges remain, including the risk of malicious agents mimicking honest robots and communication strain over long distances.
