As reported by CoinEdition, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has endorsed Base’s Layer 2 (L2) security model, calling it a proper implementation of Ethereum’s decentralized base layer. Base ensures non-custodial withdrawals via Ethereum L1, even if sequencers shut down. Buterin clarified that user assets are not custodied by Base and remain secured by Ethereum smart contracts. He also addressed concerns that sequencers function like centralized exchanges, noting that they only process transaction batches and do not match trades. Coinbase’s CLO Paul Grewal further explained that sequencers operate more like cloud infrastructure services than exchanges. Base is currently at stage 1 decentralization and is working toward stage 2 block building.
